RE: Laptop battery not taking charge
If you take the battery out, does it have a status indicator on it (usually press a button and the lights come on)? If this shows no lights it's probably a dead battery.

RE: Laptop battery not taking charge
I assume if you pull the plug out while the laptop is running it just turns off (as in battery completely dead)? I think you're gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a replacement battery, AFAIK the usual lifespan for those models is about 2 years, so you're close to that.

RE: Laptop battery not taking charge
If the laptop is running on mains, and the battery hasn't been gradually losing capacity and just suddenly stopped charging, there's a well known problem with either the charging circuitry on the motherboard failing or a pin out on the charger getting damaged, leading to the "battery not charging" problem with Dells.

I did a fair bit of research when the same problem happened to my godson's laptop. AFAIR, the pins/circuitry are designed to detect genuine Dell chargers or something, presumably to prevent you plugging the wrong charger in and blowing the laptop up.

I suggest doing a Google before purchasing another battery.

Guess it must be motherboard circuitry then Sadblink coz i swapped batteries on my spare dell laptop and the battery charges up fine. but does not charge on my laptop.
wonder how much a new motherboard would be?
Might be a good time to get one of those tiny netbooks Think

Arm and Leg, I suspect...

FWIW, there are a couple of reviews of netbooks on my blog - Dell Mini 9 (which discontinued as soon as it came out, naturally!) and Acer Aspire One running Linux.

Don't be put off by people saying netbooks aren't "proper computers". I'm writing this using a Asus eeeBox, which is basically an eeePC in a box you plug a standard keyboard and monitor into. It's perfectly functional driving WinXp (and tho I've not personally bothered to upgrade because I've got too much software I don't want to find is incompatible, I'm told Win7 runs fine too, which seems to be able to run on much lower spec'd machines than Vista was capable of.

My Mini9 has a solid state disk that should give it some advantages in terms of robustness over conventional drives - ferrying my previous subcompact around on the bike shook the disk to bits, which is a PITA as it's a rather unusual ZIF 1.8" Hitachi, which is naturally unobtainable.

Obviously the keyboards and screens on the netbooks are small, but if you can work around that, the only thing that I've found that the netbooks (and this eeeBox) struggle with is full screen video if it's high definition, but it's fine for YouTube and BBC weather forecasts.
