I have just taken my bike for new fork seals and MOT down at ANC this morning. First time I had ridden the bike for a couple of months or so due to family commitments and after I had done a few changes on it (wheels, tyres, discs, etc).

Holy cow, what have I missed?!?!?!? The bike felt superb and put a huge smile on my face and bulge in my trousers (ANC don't take cards just yet, so had to take a wad of cash, hence the bulge in my pocket ....!)

Ok, it was only local and not very long on the bike, but boy did I need that. Can't wait to pick it up again now. And a nice sunny start to the day as well! Lovely jubbly.

So strange as I was covering approx. 20k miles a year when I was commuting to London, but this ride felt so new, fresh and envigarating. Probably a little rusty round the edges, but will not be leaving it so long before my next big ride! It feels like I have found a long lost toy and it is new all over again.

I do like trying to save a few pennies by working on my bike at home, such as servicing, repairs, spraying, etc. It doesn't always work out, but always a good learning curve!

Anyway, my last project in spraying my YZF750 a few months back went a bit tits up as the paint reacted, causing huge blisters and needed to be stripped back and repainted. Alas, it taught me a few lessons:

Always take time prepping the panel, use suitable grit abrasive paper, good quality primer, more wet and dry sanding (1200 grit), wash it down in thinners or equivalent, bit more sanding, a quality rag to remove dust and fibres and all of which taking time.

After the main coat went on, it was lovely and smooth and gloss finish, so was shocked to read instructions (yes, I actually read instructions for a change!) on the lacquer tin to sand off the gloss finish. Oh well, done that and gloss black went to a matt finish. Applied lacquer (came out milky white first) and has now dried to the following article. Waiting a few days to dry properly before waxing/polishing.

Ok, it's not perfect, but not bad for a windy, dusty and disorganised garage! Also naff lighting in garage, so will get some better pics done when on bike in daylight. Just need to get the other decals on in suitable places.

A nice little puzzlement for people in the know!

Problem: Sometimes when trying to start my bike (GSXR750 SRAD carbed) it turns once and then a bang, as though it's broken something drastic. Upon trying to start it again, the starter solenoid only clicks and no cranking of the starter.

First thought: Wasn't sure at first and as the solenoid only clicked, it sounded like it had a flat battery, so put that on charge. After a charge, tried starting it and only solenoid clicking. Ah ha, stuck starter motor I thought. Dropped it in gear, rocked it and then it started no problem.

Hit ebay and: Purchased a new starter and got it on. Surprise surprise, it started! However, this was a one off and went back to solenoid clicking only.

Other symptoms: It did have a slow fuel leak out the left hand side, which stops when bike had been started and stopped. If upon starting it turns without firing and then 'jams', the leak re-appears.

Investigation: There was a disconnected wire/plug going to the end of the carb. Plugged this back in, but didn't help.

Therefore the second thought for my conclusion:

It's possible the 'bang' that sometimes happens is a back fire in the engine as opposed to the exhaust. If so, when trying to start it, it is creating pretty large compression in the cylinder. If this compression is so high, is it possible the starter is unable to crank it over if the timing is out and the cylinder is containing huge compression? If so, this pressure can only be released through say the carb, hence it forcing out the fuel and therefore the leak? Also, as mentioned before, the engaging of a gear and rocking the bike would in effect move the piston/valves and therefore release the pressure, hence the starter being able to crank it over.

So, my conclusion is to get the timing sorted, although when running it seems ok.

Hmmm, any other opinions/thoughts?

Noticed this afternoon that one of my fork oil seals has started to leak. Not dripping with oil, but there was definitely a light oil residue on it. Wasn't picked on the MOT last week.

Are oil seals difficult to do on USD forks? Looked at a few online write-ups, and doesn't seem too hard but I have only ever done mountain bike forks...

Or should I buy the seals, take the forks off the bike and let the 'stealer-ship' do them for me? I know that would save a few quid in labour charges.
